The Carolina Speed is pleased to announce that they have signed their first seven players for the 2011 season. Players that where signed consist of several veteran players with indoor experience that have been actively pursed by Speed management and coaches as well as rookies and free agents that had an impressive showing at the Speed open tryout on December 5th.  Out of the seven players signed three are quarterbacks, one is a kicker, one is a defensive lineman, one is a wide receiver and one is a linebacker. Below you will find their bios.

Aries Nelson – QB
Pro Experience:
Harrisburg Stampede (AIFA)

College: Mississippi State Univ.

Aries Nelson led the Harrisburg Stampede to an 11-3 regular season record in the AIFA in 2010. He also led them to a first round playoff win against the Erie Storm before losing to the eventual 2010 AIFA Champion Baltimore Mariners. During the season Aries passed for over 300 yards in six different games.
Aries played for the Mississippi Mudcats of the AIFA in 2008. The Mudcats where one of the strongest professional arena/indoor football teams in the country at the time and finished the 2008 regular season with a 13-0  record and an overall record of 15-1. Aries lead his team to an exciting come from behind victory in the first round of the AIFA playoffs against the Columbus Lions before losing to the Wyoming Cavalry in the AIFA Western Conference Finals.

Antonio Miller – QB
Pro Experience: Rookie
College: University of Tenn-Chatt.

Antonio Miller played college football at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga from 2004 through 2007 where he throw for 3832 yards and 21 touchdowns in his career and still holds several of the schools records today.
Antonio went to Olympic High School in Charlotte, North Carolina where he was a 3-year starter and was rated the No. 13 prospect in the state by rivals.com and was chosen for Shrine Bowl his senior year. During his junior year he completed 57% of his passes for 2,610 yards and 16 touchdowns, in addition he ran for another 864 yards on the ground being named team MVP that year.  Antonio was recruited out of high school by East Carolina, Kansas State, Maryland, Marshall, Virginia, Va. Tech,  Tenn-Chatt and Wake Forest.

Nico Yantko– QB.
Pro Experience: Rookie.
College: Murray State University.

Nico Yantko comes to the Carolina Speed as a rookie having played college football at Murray State University of the Ohio Valley Conference. While with the Murray State Racers he saw most of his action his senior year and showed great poise and leadership on a under achieving team.

Bruce Reinecker– K.

Numerous teams (AIFA), (AF2), (NIFL).
College: West Liberty State College.

Bruce is an established indoor football veteran and a former Arena Football League kicker with the N.Y. Dragons and Chicago Rush.  Bruce brings a great deal of experience to the Speed through his long list of accomplishments at the professional level. He attended West Liberty State College in West Virginia where he set many school records. He played in the Arena Football League, AF2, American Indoor Football Association, United Football League and the National Indoor Football League. Bruce holds several indoor kicking records at the AF2 level in addition to being a two time AF2 all-star recipient.

SaMario Houston –  LB/DE.

In March of 2010 SaMario signed and became a member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League (CFL), previously he was drafted by the Berlin Thunder in the 12th round of the NFL Europe (NFL-E) Free Agent Draft where he played in 2007. Houston was one of eight Division II players selected in that year's draft.
While at Catawba College, Houston earned All-SAC Freshman Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2002. He was also a two-time First Team All-SAC pick in 2003 and 2004. After his 2003 campaign, the former Indian was selected to the All-Region Second Team. In 2005, Houston was tabbed as a Preseason All-American by Football Gazette.

Daron Clark–  WR/KR.

College: Stillman College.
Ht: 5’8”  Wt: 170

Daron Clark comes to the Speed from the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League (CFL) where he signed for the 2010 season. Previous to signing with the Alouettes he played for the New York Sentinels of the United Football League (UFL) during the 2009 season. The kick return specialist and wide receiver played college ball for the Stillman College Tigers. In his senior season for the Tigers, Clark returned 11 punts for 128 yards, averaging 11.6 yards per attempt. He also scored on a 47-yard return against Benedict..
Clark gained 215 yards on 11 kickoff returns, averaging 19.5 yards per attempt. He also caught 20 passes for 418 yards and three touchdowns. His longest catch went for 84 yards against Edward Waters. Clark ranked second on the team with 760 all-purpose yards and was named to All-Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Second team. Clark should make a bright addition to the Alouettes roster.

Vonzell Pittman–  LB/WR.

Iowa Barnstormers (Af2).
College: Gardner-Webb University.
Ht: 6’4”  Wt: 210

Vonzell attended Rookie Camp with the New England Patriots in 2008 as well as individual workouts for the Pittsburgh Steelers later in the same year. Vonzell spent the 2009 season as the jack linebacker for the Iowa Barnstormers of the Arena Football League 2. He recorded 8 solo tackles and 6 assisted tackles, a tackle in the backfield for a loss, broke up a pass and topped it off with a 50 yard fumble recovery for a touch down in his first professional season. He went on to record 8 solo tackles and 4 assisted tackles in the playoffs for Iowa.
