Speed Victory Comes Down to Final "Bell" in 45-40 win.
Pregame speeches and Pastoral admonitions were all about family this week. Focus for the Speed was on how players step up when called upon and pull together with coaches and staff -no matter what, as a family. The Fayetteville Guard quickly jumped out to 10-0 lead. The Speed never wavered. Coach Ben McGarity demanded that his family show him how they react to adversity. With only pride to play for in these final two weeks his family did not let him down. Earlier this week a Cleveland McCoy was invited into Detroit Lions camp forcing the start of QB Tribble Reese. The AIFA has frozen rosters and the Speed was unable, due to Fayetteville Coach protest, to start a newly aquired back up quarterback. All faith was placed in Reese. Tribble Reese threw a strike deep to Josh Smith to start the scoring off. Naturally Murphy's Law came into play and with the score tied, Tribble Reese was lost for the season with a tear of his MCL. The Third quarter saw the Speed reacting to adversity by putting Jimmy Bell in the drivers seat for the offense. What followed was a "wildcat" performance. Bell ran for scores and taking advantage of Fayetteville keying on the run and excellent offensive lineplay by the Speed, he threw deep touchdowns as well. A fiasco in the endzone brought the Guard to within striking distance but an incredible 4-down defensive stand from the 5 yard line stopped the Guard dead. On the final play of the game, backed up to their own one yardline after a fumbled snap. Jimmy Bell was told to just run around in the endzone for 3 seconds-even take a safety. Jimmy did as he was directed and as time ran out he saw an opening and carried the ball to within 5 feet of a score at the other end of the field. Bell was awarded a game ball for his efforts. Next week the Speed host their final game of the season on Monday Night vs the South Carolina Force. ![]() |
